Of all today’s conventional insulating materials PU offers the highest insulating performance as it has a much lower thermal conductivity value than insulating materials such as polystyrene, mineral wool, glass wool or hemp. PU with a thermal conductivity rating of 0.23, for example, insulates two-thirds better than some other material with a rating of 0.40.
PU enables a thinner insulating layer than other insulation materials and thus a thinner wall. This results in more interior space for new buildings and minimal space requirements for retrofit insulation of older buildings.
Besides being mechanically durable, moisture- and temperature-resistant and chemically stable, PU displays high aging resistance, typically extending beyond a building’s usual lifecycle.
Rigid PU panels can be cut to any size using simple tools. Even more design flexibility can be achieved by foaming the insulation material. PU can also be combined with other building materials and incorporated into composite or sandwich panels. PU metal-faced sandwich panels are particularly suitable for efficient commercial and industrial constructions.
From a lifecycle perspective PU has an excellent energy balance. PU used in building insulation, for example, saves approximately 70 times more energy over its entire lifecycle than is needed to manufacture it.

Comparison of expanded polystyrene and polyurethane foam
To understand which of these two materials is better, let’s compare them according to a number of important indicators in the form of a table.
Comparison result
Options | Polyurethane foam | Expanded polystyrene |
Density, kg / m³ | 25-750 | 45-150 |
Thermal conductivity coefficient, W / (m * K) | 0,019-0,028 | 0,04-0,06 |
Structure | Closed-cell | Closed |
Operating temperature, ° С | -160…+180 | -100…+60 |
Environmental friendliness | Polyurethane foam retains its properties and does not emit harmful substances when heated to the maximum value (+ 180 ° C). | Expanded polystyrene at a temperature of + 60 ° C begins to emit a compound dangerous to human health – phenol. |
Duration of operation, years | With proper installation, the service life is unlimited, in other cases it is 50 years. | 42278 |
Fire hazard | Incombustible | More susceptible to combustion. In high temperature conditions, burning areas can be separated, which contributes to the spread of fire. |
Hygroscopicity | Does not absorb moisture. | It is more exposed to liquids and is able to partially absorb them. |
Appearance | Does not lose its properties throughout the entire period of operation. | Over time, it shrinks, undergoes deformation due to loss of properties. |
